How to Program a DIRECTV Remote

There are two types of remotes for a DIRECTV system, the DIRECTV Universal Remote and the DIRECTV Genie Remote. Each remote is slightly different and requires a different sequence of steps. To help program your DIRECTV remote, Brad’s Electronics, your local DIRECTV provider, has put together this handy tutorial.

How to program a DIRECTV Universal Remote

Your DIRECTV Universal Remote should look like this:

The DIRECTV Universal Remote is capable of controlling your TV, any connected audio devices like a soundbar or surround sound system, and Blu-ray or DVD players.

To program a DIRECTV Universal Remote if you have a HD DVR or HD receiver:

  1. Press the MENU button on your remote.
  2. Scroll using the navigator button and select Settings & Help.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Scroll to and select Remote Control.
  5. Select Program Remote and then select which device you want to program.
  6. From here, follow the on-screen prompts to finish programing your DIRECTV Universal Remote.

If you need additional codes, use the  DIRECTV remote code lookup tool to find the 5-digit code for your device.

To program a DIRECTV Universal Remote if you have a standard DVR or an SD receiver:

  1. Press the MENU button on your remote.
  2. Scroll using the navigator button and select Parental Favs & Setup.
  3. Select System Setup.
  4. Scroll to and select Remote Control or Remote.
  5. Select Program Remote and then select which device you want to program.
  6. From here, follow the on-screen prompts to finish programing your DIRECTV Universal Remote.

How to program a DIRECTV Genie Remote

Your DIRECTV Genie Remote should look like this:

 

The DIRECTV Genie Remote is capable of controlling your TV, any connected audio devices like a soundbar or surround sound system, and Blu-ray or DVD players.

To program a DIRECTV Genie Remote make sure your DIRECTV Genie Remote is in RF mode by pressing and holding the MUTE and ENTER buttons at the same time and simultaneously pointing at your Genie HD DVR, Genie Mini, or Wireless Genie Mini. The screen should display an “Applying IR/RF setup” message.

To program a DIRECTV Genie Remote to control any connected audio devices or a normal HDTV (not DIRECTV Ready) follow the steps as described above for a DIRECTV Universal Remote with a HughesNet HD DVR or HD receiver.

To program a DIRECTV Genie Remote to control a DIRECTV Ready TV:

  1. Turn your DIRECTV Ready TV on.
  2. Press and hold the MUTE and ENTER buttons at the same time until the green light at the top of the remote flashes twice.
  3. Enter your DIRECTV Ready TV code

Common DIRECTV Ready TV Remote Codes

  • Samsung — 54000
  • Sony — 54001
  • Toshiba –54002
